69 Love Songs: Day 4

The Magnetic Fields - “A Chicken with Its Head Cut Off”

We don’t have to be stars exploding in the night
Or electric eels under the covers
We don’t have to be
Anything quite so unreal
Let’s just be lovers

“Of which Stephin Merritt says, ‘There’s not that many clichés left to be used as titles of country songs. So I was jokingly scraping the bottom of the barrel’ (in the 69 Love Songs booklet).”

Happy Independence Day!
Despite the occasional blow-ups, the crazy ways our government handles shit and the failings of our leaders, to me, this is still the greatest experiment.  I am proud to be an American.  It is not about just being born here.  To be an American, all you need is to share the common belief that we are all entitled to the most basic human rights, and among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness!  In that respect, there are billions of Americans!  We are by no means perfect, but we are all working towards a more perfect UNION.  FuckYeahUnitedStates!

going to get all "patriotic" and watch the fireworks on the national mall tonight

Via adayum

I was going to go to the Mall, too.  I got lazy listening to kcrw.com.  This is really the only thing I miss about LA.  The roof deck in the building has been renovated, so I think I’ll head up there tonight to watch the fireworks.  From the roof I have a 360 degree view of the greater DC area.  What I love from previous 7.4’s in DC is that you can also see the other cities that surround DC setting off their fireworks.  It is a glorious display.  Though, I must admit that it is tempting to go to the Mall if there is a chance to see adayum.  He seems to set off fireworks all on his own!

When a man says he approves of something in principle, it means he hasn’t the slightest intention of putting it into practice.
